Cyber Knights - First Animation Tests

Turns out blogger doesn't like animated gifs. Check it out here:

Stomp... stomp ... stomp!

This is my first time doing any kind of animation, so I wanted to share my current progress with everyone. I hope you like the 8 frame walk animation I have created for the male Cyber Knight! There is a lot of work to do to make this game-worthy, but its my first proto!

Does anyone have any animation advice to share? I'm just getting started here.

Cyber Knights - Elite Beta

Now available on the Android Market-- Cyber Knights RPG Elite!

Try out the new Cyber Knight character! The new female sandbox character allows you to create your own path across the New Boston Zone. Will it be a bloody swath, a trail of hacked hosts spewing viruses, or a shadow and an unseen breeze?

Star Traders RPG v3.9.5 Released

A new version of Star Traders RPG can be found on the Android Market.

This release includes several recent player requests that have now been fully tested and "balanced" as best we can. One in particular is that the Escape Shuttle now protects the Captain and Officers in case of Execution as well as Hull breach. (The Captain cannot use the Escape Shuttle to escape from having zero Health.)

We also have had some reports from the player's forum (http://startradersrpg.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=rules&action=display&thread=961) about a crash during a Blockade. We believe that this release should both fix that crash and improve the performance of blockade.

v3.9.5 - 7/26/2011
  • Escape Shuttle Stops Execution Defeat
  • Re Balanced Ship Prices (+/- 18%)
  • Added 18 New Elite Ships (Now 40 Each Type!)
  • Improved Blockade Performance
  • Fixed Blockade Force Close
  • Fixed Star Trader Special Ability
  • Better Ship Trade In
  • More Available of Upgrades/Ships for Sale
The free version:

Elite paid version:

Several major ship changes were tested leading up to this release, these centered around military ship costs for Fast / Quick ships as well as a re-balancing of some starting ships and Rank / Unlock ships.

This thread (http://startradersrpg.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tips&action=display&thread=907&page=1) from the forum touches on some of those topics as well.

In addition to these changes a revision has been made to the core pricing logic for ship trade ins and ship yard pricing calculations. These should result in overall better trade in prices and slightly more expensive ships for higher difficulties.

This revision amounts to an average of of 18% change across all ship prices. This is the first step in a revision of ship pricing as we move the economic and player ship management system forward (towards bases and capture / flag missions.)

Star Traders: Quick Game Guide

In steam of conscious format:

Here is what I played last night.

Hybrid Smuggler / Explorer, Javat.

My game was on Impossible, but it should work on any difficulty.

Our early game goal is to get to $150K credits and purchase Ship #2 (this ship we will use if the main ship gets badly damaged.)

We go to the main world, pick up 4 Contracts immediately from the Spice Hall. Javat Prime has a very high rating Spice Hall and is good for early game missions. After you have 4 new Contracts, Recruit.

If you started with money, spend it all on Water-Fuel (unless +6 Nano-Coat upgrade is available.)

Now go to Palace, complete Contract. Upon returning to space, complete the 4 additional Contracts as quickly as possible. Use Zoom Map to plot a fast course between them.

Early in the game we have to move fast -- difficulty is rising rapidly as the peace between the Factions collapses. We are going to complete Contracts Rapidly for Javat Prime, from the Spice Hall. Avoid combat, avoid missions against Rychart and Steel Song (we will use them for smuggling routes later.)

Do NOT buy a Trade Permit, Death Warrant or Promotion (YET.) Those will give the Faction the idea you want harder and harder missions for more and more money. You do not, you want to be a successful Captain, not a hero.

Complete the first 9 Contracts (you should also achieve 2 awards along the way here, go the the Hall of Records in the Palace to record them.) Go fast!

Now we switch to Explorer. Use your XP to max out your Explorer skill.

Spend your XP ONLY on specific stats. Raise Explorer, Tactics, Stealth and Pilot. Ignore Warrior and Intimidation and Negotiation. Raise them to 3 and ignore them after that. After get raise Explorer to equal the Attribute, we will not raise it again. Exploration is dangerous in the end game and our build is for survivable success, not immeasurable riches.

Do NOT raise your Attributes unless you absolutely have to. Focus 100% on skills until you cannot raise them without resorting to Attributes.

Now we leave Javat Prime -- set a course for Javat Mining Camp. When we arrive, buy full hold of water-fuel and a Trade Permit. Land in the wilderness. Stash all the Water-Fuel (save 4 units.) Now Explorer time. Never Send the full Crew. Aim for a Crew of about 21 on Javat Mining Camp.

Sell all your exploration finds at Javat Mining Camp. Stash if Javat has a trade war or if mining camp is embargoed.

If the Explorer returns start to drop to 1s, return to Javat Prime and do spice hall missions. Your reputation is getting very high and you are tempted to purchase Rank. Do NOT exhaust Javat Mining Camp by pushing your luck. You need that world.

Once you have Tactics 10, start exploration on Rift Leporis. We are nearing the end of Exploration time and you should have a ton of cash and rep with Javat. Relatively neutral with most others. You should be maxing out Pilot and Stealth and Tactics. This should be requiring you to raise Quickness and Wisdom and ignore Strength and Charisma.

Spend your money on upgrading your ship with +Crew, +Cargo, +Armor. Other upgrades are not useful to us.

Once the ship is fully upgraded, we should purchase a Javat Cutter. It will cost around $150K if we buy it during a rumor, more if we do not. Once we buy that ship we should keep it dry docked and upgrade it with our Explorer Surplus.

Once that Javat Cutter is upgraded, we start going to the end of the Rychart and Steel Song territory. We repeat this process with those two clans using missions and exploration.

I won't bore you with the specific worlds, but at this point the Steel and Rychart Contracts you get will still be Delivery missions, but should take you all over the map (in your AWESOME Javat Cutter)

Now you start trying to get to +10 Rep with everyone (sell them records you buy @ Indy worlds) so you can purchase trade permits. Enough trade permits will make smuggling life easier.

Cyber Knights - Mean Streets

[A new Cyber Knight is on the verge of being unleashed on the New Boston Zone]

Acidic water dripped down in a steady rain on the street corner, leaking from far above. The Soldier paced on his circuit, but avoided the contaminant from outside. Guard duty on the street was far below his rank, but the Soldier knew his place and had not opened his mouth. Yessir, was all his commander had heard, even if it irked his pride. Bright red uniform and Knight Horizon issued Squad-Support MG--both flecked now in the spray from the leak.

Blast the lazy clean-up crews who were nowhere to be seen. Blast the Mars Corp for their shoddy workmanship that turned a beautifully planned dome into a cracked, collapsing, worthless hunk of concrete hanging over the NBZ like the headman's axe. And, blast the stalker who had come over the walls at the Knight Horizon Research Facility, code-named M27-Bifrost, and caused the whole security stir.

Feeling willful, the Soldier broke his patrol cycle and arced farther away from the mist on the acrid breeze. What had they said the intruder had been hunting? Personnel records? Doubtless, she was trying to scalp some paydata. Whatever it was, the Cyber Knight had stirred up the bee's nest. A V of three hunter drone buzzed overhead, cruising around the steady water-fall. Even the machines wanted to keep themselves clean.

The Soldier stopped and checked his weapon, and looked around the street. Where was the rest of the squad assigned to this block? Those scum-guzzling idiots, where had they wandered off to? Shimmering static filled the Soldier's eyes as he engaged his low-light cyber-eyes and peered down the street. A form lying at the mouth of an alley gave a dire answer to his question. The real answer came with an earth-shaking explosion from the direction of the Bifrost that flung the Soldier to the concrete and jarred his bones against the ground. Groaning to his feet, his squad member's fate came into focus--dead, slit-throat. The ground still trembled as the Soldier turned toward M27-Bifrost in a dead sprint under the roar of drones and gun-fire. Death may have passed over him today, but his commander would not be so merciful if the Cyber Knight scored her target.

What's in your Cargo Hold?

Artifacts
Carrying Artifacts Increase Chances of Solar Accidents for each Artifact.
  • Each Artifact that the Captain carries increases the number of accidents by +1%
  • Each accident will cause between 0 and 10 points of damage per effected area
  • Each artifact that the Captain carries increases the amount of damage done to each area by +1%. So of the Captain is about to suffer 30 points of Accident damage and is carrying 20 Artifacts the actual total will be 36 points of Accident damage.
  • For each artifact that the Captain carries the severity of the accident is increased by +2%.
  • An accident has a severity rating from 1-100 and is randomly generated based on distance from green sectors, rumors. Artifacts modify that total. At 1 the Accident only effects Solar Sails. At 100 it effects solar sails, crew and engines (each taking 0-10 points of damage.)
Electronics
Carrying Electronics is a double edge sword providing benefits and penalties.
  • Each Electronics in the Cargo hold Increases Chances of Encounters by +1%
  • Each Electronics in the Cargo hold Increases the rating of the enemy ships by +2%. Enemy ship Rating is divided between Ship Cost, AI Intelligence and NPC Captain XP.
  • Each Electronics in the Cargo Hold Increases the chance that the enemy ship will be a Military Officer on Patrol for Spies (up to +30% maximum)
  • Each Electronics in the Cargo Hold Increases the chance of successful Surveillance by roughly 1% under ideal (non-rumor, non-conflict, orbital conditions.) This bonus could vary between 0.1% (Radiation Storm, Deep Space) and 2.68% (low security independent world.)
  • Each Electronics in the Cargo Hold increases the chance of a bonus +1 Record being created by 1%
Weapons
Carrying Weapons is a double edge sword providing benefits and penalties.
  • Each Weapon in the Cargo hold Increases Chances of Encounters by +1%
  • Each Weapon in the Cargo hold Increases the rating of the enemy ships by +2%. Enemy ship Rating is divided between Ship Cost, AI Intelligence and NPC Captain XP.
  • Each Weapon in the Cargo Hold Increases the chance of successful Blockade by roughly 1% under ideal (non-rumor, non-conflict, orbital conditions.) This bonus could vary between 0.1% (Navy Crack Down, Capital World) and 2.68% (Radiation Storm, Nonindependent World.)
  • Each Weapon in the Cargo Hold increases the chance of a bonus +100 Credits being created by 1%
Records
Carrying Records in the hold is useful.
  • Each Record in the Hold provides a +1 Explorer Bonus up to 80% of the Planet's total Danger or Richness, whichever is higher (AKA, optimal for player.)
  • Each Record in the hold provides a +0.5 Explorer Bonus for the Scout Officer

Cyber Knights - Did you find The Wheel?

Did you find The Wheel? From feedback on the forum, its clear that a lot of people have not found The Wheel on their own. Its available from any of the Team Status pages (Stats, Gear, Computer, or Factions) by simply touching your current character's portrait. It makes it easy and fast to navigate the different Team Status pages.

Thanks for the feedback from all the great Cyber Knights players out there and our team of BETA testers on the forum! We are getting some great suggestions on how to make The Wheel more obvious, but in the mean time we wanted to point it out to everyone!

Who Is The Captain and What is the Exchange?

Your Captain is a "Spacer" and the men and women operating the Exchanges are "Gravs" or "Grounders" and there is a sharp and clear social and political division between these two classes. One of the most stark divisions is in regards to access to resources.

The "Exchange" that the Captain visits is a carefully regulated trade zone that is accessible to both Spacers (independent and reputable faction members as well) and (depending on local customs, rules, laws and traditions) any planet-side merchant with the necessary permits and contracts.

Shalun Law, which governs warfare, espionage, manufacturing, trade and criminal justice defines the rules of the Exchange and the role the Central Database plays in this system. All Trades in the Exchange are recorded and are public record to Spacer and Grav alike. Any who violate the laws of the Exchange can be banned for life or an edict of execution issued by the controlling Prince.

The Prince determines what is available in the Exchange, how much and when. Depending on Faction quotas, military requirements, local consumption very little or no goods may be deemed available to the Spacer Exchange.

In my mental model of the game, the Captain who "ends a shortage" has successfully filled a high dollar order from the Prince. It is the Prince, not the local merchants, who cools the prices.

Visit an Exchange, for kicks, while the Prince is in hiding. You may find some odd things happening ...

An Interview with the Military Officer

Star Traders Weekly: Can you talk a little about your advice for boarding?

Military Officer:
Certainly, Cynthia. I like to give each Crew Member 2 weapons (that is Crew * 2 - Engines = Weapons in Hold.) I also suggest that you strike fear before boarding. My boarding attackers do this:

Round #1: Torp!
Round #2: Close
Round #3: Guns
Round #4: Close
Round #5: Decks (now they're scared!)
Round #6: Board

-- If, upon loosing a Boarding Action AND your ship did not take a hit, immediately Gun.

More than likely the enemy still has Crew in shuttles or allocated to "outside the ship"

With 70 Crew I would tell my Captain to keep around 60 weapons on board.

Star Trader's Weekly: That's all well and good, but we want the real details!

#1
Weapons benefit the crew on the Engines ONLY if the enemy ship wins Boarding action and gets hostile Crew on Board.

#2
Enemy ships have an "upgrade package" that is consistent for the character class of the pirates. They are not specifically "Attack Shuttles" but they have many of the same modifiers.

#3.
After Boarding is completed, the game is tracking "Crew Points" in various Locations. In a battle between Good Ship and Bad Ship, the Crew of Good Ship could be:

A: On Good Ship
B: In Transit To Bad Ship
C: Fighting Inside Bad Ship
D: Fighting Inside Critical Area of Bad Ship
E: Fighting with Captain Inside Bad Ship
F: Fighting with Captain on Bridge of Bad Ship

So, sometimes you will fight at Boarding Range but repel Boarders. Therefore, the Crew points are stuck in "B" and are very vulnerable to destruction in the next turn.

If you think about it as a dice game, the Captains are allocating Crew orders (say, as cards face down on the table) and then rolling dice to see who's cards, and how many, are flipped up. The result is the mix of cards.
