Star Traders 2 Update and 50% off Games for Backers

Dear Captain-Backers,

It’s Cory here, and we’ve got a few things to share. We are in the final days of the Star Traders 2 Kickstarter, and it has been a wild ride. So hold on, everyone … this landing could get interesting.

In today’s update we got a few things to ask, and a few things to offer. We’ll start with the asking.

Now for the good part, our offers -- negotiating and such not. As you may know, we've got some other games you can play on your PC or Mac and we’re offering a 50% off, Kickstarter-exclusive deal. This type of deal normally comes up once a year in Steam Summer Sale and now, for the rest of the project, it is here on KickStarter.




These games usually run in the $10 to $12 range and you, our honored backers, can get them for just $5. This offer is good on Heroes of Steel RPG and Star Traders 4X, PC and Mac. We will honor these purchases with a Steam Key and a Desura key so you can play on either gaming network.

If you wish to add one or both games, increase your pledge by the corresponding amount above the reward you have selected. For example, if you wish to get a copy of Star Traders 4X Empires ($5) and get the $10 Reward for Star Traders 2, then you would increase your pledge to $15 in total and leave your selection at the $10 reward tier. As a second example, if you were already pledging at the $100 reward, you could raise your pledge to $110 and the leave your reward selection at $100 to get both games.



As soon as the project funds, we’ll reach out to you and arrange the game (Heroes, 4X Empires) and gaming network (Steam, Desura) you’d like and send you your keys.

Star Traders 2 -- A Million Maps Await

We are in the final days of the Star Traders 2 KickStarter. We want to thank you again for your amazing support, for raising your pledges, and for driving us every day closer and closer to the goal. Death before dishonor, Templar -- let’s fund this project!  

Star Traders 2 is built around a procedurally generated galactic map that will change during the game. Where previous titles focused on isolated worlds and quadrants where territorial ownership had stagnated, Star Traders 2 is set in a rapidly expanding universe with numerous Factions contesting control of individual systems and whole quadrants. The reunification of the scattered quadrants has triggered a tsunami of change and the washed away old power structures and agreements. A new frontier awaits, just beyond the next hyperwarp gate -- and every Faction with Credits to employ a Star Trader wants a piece of it.



Space travel before the discovery of the hyperwarp gate network was dangerous and slow. No Captain would have risked travel between quadrants which required drifting in deep space for years, far beyond the range of the solar winds capable of powering a ship's sails.

The gates changed everything. The vast hyperwarp network stretches across the galaxy like the strands of an ancient spiderweb waiting to be explored. Built in the distant past by a long-gone race of beings known only as the Alfan, many of the gates are open and working while others are damaged or broken. With its creators extinct, only the existing network of gates can be utilized, the technology or power to repair or expand the network is lost.

Each game in Star Traders 2 will feature a unique, procedurally generated network of hyperwarp gate for your Captain to explore. When you create a new Captain, you’ll have the option to use one of the classic maps provided with the game, to pick an existing map from another one of your Captains, or generate a brand new map. This setup will allow you to replay your favorite maps or try a new experience with every Captain.



Star Traders 2 will blend hand-crafted maps and procedural content. Therefore the Quadrant known as the Rinze Arm will appear in each game. While the Rinze Arm may feature similar planets and resources, the hyperwarp gates that allow access to it will be different, as will the Factions that struggle for control over it and the key political players within its boundaries. In every game, the Rinze Arm will be a new instance of itself, and a new horizon for a Captain to experience.

The hyperwarp gates that are used by most Captains are located far outside of a system’s gravity wells, at the very edge of deep space, beyond the pull of the stars and planets of a quadrant. These distant gates are used because activating a Gate Drive within a gravity field is very dangerous and can result in catastrophic damage to the drive or the ship. This also makes Gates notoriously difficult to locate, and Captains that have skills locating them can reap tremendous profits.

From within a hyperwarp gate, the traveling period appears to be instantaneous to an observer on the inside. In standard time as recorded by those outside the gates, travel along different hyperwarp routes requires different amounts of time -- some routes take only hours, others take weeks. This can be a mixed blessing for Captains who crisscross the galaxy via hyperwarp gates -- political shifts, changing allegiances and news that travels slowly across the galaxy can all complicate the life of a spacing crew.

Star Traders 2 is our dream for an open-universe space RPG in which you command your ship, hand-pick your crew, and roam freely through a complex, changing universe with freedom of choice in your goals, morality, and career. We'll be building on the tradition of the original ST RPG and expanding the game in both depth and breadth.

Profession Competition

The Faction competition was so much fun, that we've decided to open a second friendly competition -- this time all about your favorite profession! As a Captain and a backer, you’ll help us highlight the most popular and most beloved professions. There are bonuses at stake for the professions in Star Trader RPG, so get to your voting booth as fast as possible and make your allegiances known!

Any profession that receives at least 15 votes will gain a minor bonus in Star Traders RPG. With so many professions to choose from, getting 15 votes will not be easy! Star Traders 2 Alpha Access

Alpha phases hold a very dear place in our hearts here at Trese Brothers. Our focus during an Alpha is to give you the game when it has reached a point of both stability and fun, butbefore it is finished. We love hosting these Alphas because we get to work so closely with the team members while they are playing the game, sharing their first experiences, and brainstorming with us on how to take the game to the next level.

I wrote up a few questions and answers about the Alpha Access phase I wanted to share. We believe that a Trese Brothers Alpha Access phase is a very unique offering in the game development world. We have 90 Captains signed up already. We hope you will consider joining us!

Ship Design in Star Traders 2


As a Star Trader Captain you command a special place within the quadrants and among the mighty Factions. You are one of the elite few who possess the skills, leadership and luck to be a licensed Star Trader and the sole owner of a spacing vessel. As a Captain, you may choose to ally with a Faction or strike your own path - you are the final authority on your spacing ship, and it is both liberating and a great responsibility.

It is your ship, and your license to use it as an independent Star Trader, that sets you apart from the rest of the galaxy.

Star Traders 2 - Faction Competition


It is time to come out and support your Faction. We’re opening a friendly competition among our Captains and Backers to spotlight the most popular Factions among those in the Star Traders RPG Quadrant. There are bonuses at stake in the existing Star Traders games (RPG and 4X Empires) so get to your voting poll as fast as possible and make your allegiances known!

Any Faction who receives at least 50 votes will receive a minor Faction bonus in Star Traders RPG as well as a minor advantage to their Faction-specific technology in Star Traders 4X Empires. Getting a full 50 votes is not going to be easy, so get the vote out!

The Faction who receives the highest number of votes will be crowned the winner and will receive a major Faction bonus in Star Traders RPG as well as a major advantage to their Faction-specific technology in Star Traders 4X Empires. Your Faction needs you!

Star Traders 2 - Updates 4 & 5

Last night we crossed the 25% funding milestone for the Star Traders 2 KickStarter! You've shown us such love and support, and we've come so far so fast toward turning Star Traders 2 RPG into a reality! Your positive energy and support is infectious and it's drawing many new Captains to our project as well.

Tonight, I wanted to share this little art video in which you can watch me draw, color, shade, and light the heavy weapons officer. It's a fast transition from line art to finished in the video, but this took a while! Enjoy!

Star Traders 2 RPG KickStarter - Off to a Killer Start

  • If funded, Star Traders 2 RPG is targeted for Q4 of 2015. 
  • We plan to have an extensive multi-month alpha in which the alpha team works closely with the Trese Brothers in the last stages of development, and have a chance to influence the game development directly. 
  • Rewards still include a 30% off pre-order of the game if you move quickly, and the ability to pre-order on multiple platforms. 
  • Higher level rewards allow you to add your own creation (your Captain from the original Star Traders, an officer, a faction NPC, a legendary Captain, or an entire Quadrant!) to the game for all gamers to enjoy.

KickStarter Update #2 - Motivation Engine and Crew

To celebrate passing the 22% funding mark, we've shared an update that takes a deeper look at the goals behind the Motivation Engine and what crew will mean to you as a Captain!

A ship cannot fly without her crew and so one of your most important responsibilities as a Captain is selecting, developing and retaining a talented staff of varying disciplines. Each individual ship will have specific requirements as to the number and type of Crew to operate it efficiently. Ships with high maintenance hyperwarp drives demand more engineers while military ships with heavy armaments will need well-trained gunnery teams. Ships with large crews will need an officer corps to take commanding positions of leadership in the crew hierarchy.

Building Vraes for Nightmare


I really like Kincaid.  He is a lot of fun to play ... but ... just look at this screenshot.  When you're playing Nightmare, this kind of unstoppable endurance is priceless.  He is surrounded, battling on blood-slick stone, the snick-snick of Deathkin ringing in his ears, but he won't go down.

My last Nightmare Ironman group came through here with Kincaid.  It was a nail biter of a fight.  I have to admit, this one was too, but I am a stubborn and prideful player, and Vraes refused to retreat from his position.  Then, when enough of the vermin were down, he pulled his classic "Charge!"

This is the first fight in a long run of extremely hard, pitched battles against the Ratkin.  You're flowing a river of souls to Ryethin, and there is an army of Ratkin between you and your target.  To get through this part of the Ratkin Lairs, you need to either retreat and let the enemy come to you, or build a group with a raw talent to survive.

Don't let me forget to mention that Fyona is crushing it with that two handed hammer!
