Modding comes to Templar Battleforce on Steam

Every journey starts with a first step. This journey starts with one, huge, mechanized, crunching step of a Leviathan war mech.  Hopefully a xeno skull was under our boot!  We've added the very first mod-able feature to Templar Battleforce.  While modding is very limited, and we don't have full support for Steam Workshop, we've started down the path.

If you are excited about creating or playing mods in Templar Battleforce, please share your interest, excitement and post about it, tell us what you'd like to see, and leave reviews on the game.

This week, we've added the ability to add more faces to the game.  But loading a small mod configuration file and some new art, you can extended the list of faces that the game supports.

We've detailed that in our new Steam Guide on Modding.

A common request we have received is to be able to use the story faces from the game as your Templars.  Our sample mod for this feature basically allows that -- letting you use Nyra, Marielle, the cult leader, or Luthor as a Templar.

Yes, it is a very small step forward, with only one mod feature.  However, you've seen our penchant for post-release support and expansion for a game, so expect more exciting things coming down the pipe.  Post your questions, requests, and ideas for what we could add that would help expand the game and bring you back for another round of xeno-vs-mech deathmatch!

v2.3.5 - 6/29/2016
 - New modding feature added for Steam, first mod published
 - Fixed bugs with library entries appearing off screen
 - Improved maps and fixed dialog typos

Star Traders 4X Empires: AI and Performance Booster!

First up - it is Steam Summer sale!  Pick up a copy of any of our games on discount, or complete the set with our Trese Brothers bundle.

This week, thanks to some work we were doing for our latest game, Templar Battleforce, we were down deep in the game engine and have squeezed out a significant performance boost across the board -- improving the speed of enemy turns, the UI, turn events, basically everything.

On top of that, we've made some specific tweaks to the enemy AI to help it plan and process its turns faster.

We've made some minor changes to the maintenance cost of the different levels of Exchange, as well as reducing the number of negative political happenings that might effect games on Normal or lower difficulty.

v2.6.13 - 6/24/2016
 - Major Performance Improvements
 - Xeno Colonization Stategic AI Improved
 - Mining Economy Balancing Updates
 - Balanced Maintenance Costs for Exchanges
 - Slightly Reduction in Conflict Generation on Normal Difficulty

Heroes of Steel v4.2.39: +Crit Dmg, Items Grid, Perf Booster

First - it is Steam Summer sale!  Pick up a copy of any of our games on discount, or complete the set with our Trese Brothers bundle.

Second, this week we have added a new type of effect into the game's balance -- the +Crit Damage % effect.  This increases the multiplier for Critical Damage, in the event that you roll one.  If you were causing 200 Dmg, rolled a Crit, and had +50% Crit Dmg, you'd score an extra 100 Dmg for it, plus whatever normal Damage you were going to get on your Crit multipler roll.  Check out the Talents -- Aimed Shot, Berserk Rage, Hammer Blow and Smiting Blow for this new ability.  It will be coming to gear in a near term update.

Speaking of Damage from Criticals, we've also improved the balance of higher AP attacks to do more critical damage.  A standard weapon (1 AP or 2 AP) will still result in the same potential Crit Damage range, from 200% to 300% Dmg.  If you are using a 3 AP attack or spell, you get a +50% bonus to that Dmg, and a 4 or higher AP attack gets a +100% bonus to that attack.  Major crush!

Also, thanks to some big work Templar Battleforce, we've been down in the dungeons of the game engine's core and we have squeezed out a significant performance boost across the board -- improving the speed of enemy turns, movement, story cut-scenes, basically everything.

Finally, we've switched the Item list over into a grid form to help reduce scrolling. Enjoy!

v4.2.39 - 6/23/2016
- Major performance boost to game map across the board
 - New type of game effect: Increased Critical Dmg %
 - Increased Crit Dmg for high AP weapons/spells; 3 AP is +50%, 4+ AP is +100%
 - Berserk Rage, Hammer Blow, Smiting Blow, Aimed Shot gain +Crit Dmg
 - Items list converted to grid, fixed bug with Fast Movement option
 - Improved balance in the Weaver fights

Templar Battleforce: Summer Sale + Performance Booster

First - it is the wonderful time of Steam Summer sale and Templar Battleforce is 30% off!  Pick up a copy of any of our games on discount, or complete the set with our Trese Brothers bundle.

We'd like to extend a big "thank you" the thousands of players who have helped us to continually improve and expand the features and content set for Templar Battleforce.  As we approach update #40, we're excited to have some big things in the works!

This week, we dug down deep into the core of our engine and have squeezed out a significant performance boost across the board -- improving the speed of enemy turns, movement, story cut-scenes, basically everything.

Wrapping up on the Status screen improvements, you can now see the name of the "offending" Templar if you are trying to use a Relic that someone else is carrying.  We've improved the cycle and focus events when you're hopping out into the Requisition Tree to look at locked items.

Thanks to the players who reported bugs and crashes -- we've fixed everything that came in this week!

v2.3.3 - 6/23/2016
 - Major performance boost to game map across the board
 - Alert about relic already in uses lists Templar's name
 - Improved viewing specific locked Equip / Talent on RQ tree
 - Duration Hindering Effects, like Full Vent, no longer extended by Ordnance
 - Fixed defog bug during story sequences when Skip All enabled
 - Fixed Status screen bugs, crashes

Templar Battleforce v2.3.1: HQ & Status Rebuild

As promised, we've doubled-down on the UI improvements to the HQ and status screens.  This is definitely the biggest wave of improvements that we have planned, but they make a huge difference in your ability to see, level, train and equip your squad quickly and with precision!

We've basically rebuilt the status screen stack!
- You can now level your Talents with a few clicks - no more flipping around.  Respec'ing Talents FTW!
- You can now jump to the RQ tree from any screen viewing a veteran, quickly buy the RQ levels you need and back to the mix.
- You can now next / previous between Templars from any status screen, including EQ and design. Want to re-design your whole squad, just flip next-next-next on the Design screen.
- We've split the library screen into a dual screen, allowing you to page through the content way faster.  Enjoy the reading!

Please leave a review to encourage additional updates, features, and UX improvements!

v2.3.1 - 6/15/2016
 - Improved Status screen, paging between Templars, Talent leveling
 - Improved Library viewer
 - Added return to RQ shortcut in status screen
 - Improved tutorial elements around Overwatch
 - Fixed crashes in Kaldun Factory South

Warlord Mal Brings Us - Let's Play Templar Battleforce

Burning, slicing, and blasting his way across the Quadrant, Warlord Mal is assembling one of the best Let's Plays for Templar Battleforce yet.  His distinctive style of showing off his spending on the RQ tree as well as his leveling in a fast-cut before the action starts helps you both get a handle on his overarching strategy, as well as enjoy the tense combat of Battleforce.

In the Mind of Brett Caron: Author of Subjective Vengeance

Brett Caron (@brettcaron) has now penned two phenomenal works of fiction within the Star Traders universe, giving unique and gripping life to new perspectives of what it is like to be a Captain, an officer, or a lowly crew. The larger-than-life Star Trader Captains dominate the story arcs and drive the major action, but the real stories being told are more human, more personal, and tangled up in the web of relationships, love, and hatred among the stars.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Brett (digitally) and learning more about his history as a writer, where he finds his inspirations, and what he will do next.

Download Brett's works, Subjective Vengeance and No Legacy Between the Stars for your device today!

==
When and how did you get into writing in the first place?

Brett: My first writing job was as a contributor to andPOP’s Gamer’s Mind Blog. I worked with a great editor named Josh Salem, and got a bunch of free games as part of my reviews. It was a lot of fun, and I had a great time writing about video games. But when I look back, I see writing all the way back into my childhood. My favourite assignments were all short stories or the like, and I was very protective of my scores on those. I remember getting into a very loud argument with my 7th grade teacher over whether ‘Writ’ was a word after I used it in a story title. She was not happy to be proved wrong, but I was rarely on good terms with most of my teachers.

You've now given your readers a unique look into the lives of an Explorer Captain and a Bounty Hunter -- what do you think will be next?

Brett: Well there’s so many places to go in the Star Traders universe. I like to keep mixing it up, but what I’ve been doing is focusing on a story I’d like to tell and then figuring out who will be telling it. Even though both these stories feature Star Traders, they both revolve around members of the crew. I like the idea of a Star Trader being a larger-than-life character in this universe, just as the players are above and beyond the characters they see onscreen.

When you're not working on telling tales within the Star Traders universe, what else have you been writing?

Brett: I try to keep busy. Right now I’m working with Palladium Books on a few different projects; last year I was an editor on their new Chaos Earth: Resurrection book (the most original take on zombie apocalypses I’ve seen in a while) and I’ll be at the Palladium table at Anime North on May 27th-29th in Toronto.

Other than that, I’m in the process of getting a book of short stories published, which is to say I’m trying to figure out if self-publishing is worth it over traditional publishing routes. I’m also outlining a couple of screenplays, and talking about coming on as an editor for an autobiography.

Both Subjective Vengeance and No Legacy Between the Stars have some great twists in their plots -- how do you come up with those?

Brett: I’ve played a lot of tabletop games over the last 15 or 20 years, which is actually another way I’ve had writing in my life. What I’ve learned from these games is: if you’re the Dungeon Master or GM, and you plot out a perfect story with all the details just the way you want them, the players are invariably going to run your special snowflake ideas right off the rails.

It’s the same with writing - I’ll have this story in my head, but by the time I’m near the end I start to think, “wait - this character wouldn’t do that. She’d do this,” and it blows apart my carefully-crafted plot. Sometimes that breaks the story and I have to rewrite. Other times, it becomes the foundation of a twist - if I didn’t see that coming, would the other characters in the story see it coming? The point is that any twist is a result of identifying and subverting expectations.

Any exciting new gaming or fiction that has caught your eye and you'd like to recommend your readers try out?

Brett: The Kickstarter for the Savage Rifts RPG has just finished, and I’m really excited for that - I need to go learn the tabletop system, but I think it’s going to be great. Some of the stuff coming out of Black Library for the Horus Heresy series is pretty cool, I’m a big fan of Aaron Dembski-Bowden. I’ve heard that Altered Carbon is being made into Netflix season. That’s a book I’ve been meaning to read, although it’s not exactly a new release. Maybe readers can recommend something to me!

What was the thing that drew you to Star Traders RPG the most?

Brett: I liked the collection of influences I see in Star Traders, and the fact that there’s a lot of space between what’s already written (no pun intended) to add your own flavour to your Captain and ship. The casual nature of the gameplay appealed to me, since I’m busy most of the time and can’t get too involved with a game before I have to stop and do something else. It makes it easy to build a great character 5 or 10 minutes at a time. My favourites depend on my mood - right now that’s Able Gone, a crafty Smuggler, and Ty Ponderogus, a full-on mad dog Pirate.

Templar Battleforce v2.2.5: Driving HQ Improvements

With the v2.2.5 update, we are continuing the push to improve the HQ and all the management UIs under it.  v2.2.3 brought in the notices about RQ & levels to add to the main HQ screen, and this update we've deployed new sorting abilities into the Veterans List and improved the visualization of Attributes & Skills.  We are entering a focused period of working on the HQ, its sub-screens, and the navigation between them, so expect a couple more updates of back-to-back improvements.

We've also added a new Achivement for beating the Stratos deployment (sorry it is late), added the number of enemies killed to the ticker in the bottom of the Objectives screen (extra helpful in levels where you are counting kills) and fixed a bug that was causing enemies spawned from Tact Points on the first turn of a map to be low level, regardless of how beasty they should have been.  So, watch out on that one.

v2.2.5 - 6/8/2016
 - Added sorting by name or level to Veterans list
 - Improved display of Attributes & Skills in Status screen
 - Added new achievement for Stratos Orbital deployment
 - Added number of enemies killed to Objectives screen
 - Fixed bug with improperly leveled enemies spawning from Tact Point at level start

Heroes of Steel v4.2.37 - Remembering Active Hero & Auto-Glom

This week, we've kept the focus on quality of life improvements around Auto-Glom.  First up, the game now remembers your active character as you travel through the world.  If you lead with your sneak, you can now traverse the world without ever changing characters.  A small thing, but a big impact!

Second, if enabled, Auto-Glom now fires after the last turn of combat ends.  Its another case that can help you get back to playing quicker with less clicks on the UI.

Thanks to everyone who is suggesting improvements, we are very excited to be rolling them into the game, even years after release.

In case you haven't heard, we recently shared new fiction within the world of Steel. We have the privilege to work with some awesome authors who are helping us spin new stories within our game worlds.  The Reclamation follows the tale of the gloomer Landon, who has decided he can no longer live in the prison that is the Underdeep.  He must see the sun!

Check out all of the Trese Brothers fiction at our fiction main site!

v4.2.37 -
 - Read new fiction world of Steel, download The Reclamation today
 - Currently selected character remembered when traveling between regions
 - Improved Auto-Glom to fire after last turn of combat
 - Fixed crashes on game load with present enemies
 - Fixed typos and map bugs, reported crashes
